R6N "Rookie Camp" Coached by Experts!

Welcome! This year, think of R6N as a "rookie camp" for beginners… coached by expert instructors, former and current U.S. Team members, and other experienced racing pilots. Competitors, whether new or accustomed to making the rounds each year on the contest circuit, are encouraged to audit or contribute to the camp’s Morning Lecture Series and Flight Trace Analysis Sessions. If you’re a newbie who's still learning how to use that flight computer of yours, or who's trying to better understand how to take advantage of energy lines and increase their speed around a course, and/or still having trouble figuring how to predict and achieve maximum distance at just over minimum task time, than this is the camp for you! First time contestants often report learning more in one week then they had in several years of casual flying. Here you can immerse yourself in cross-country soaring knowing R6N has been largely designed for beginners. You will be surprised at the progress you’ve made by week's end. Our goal is to get you to the point where you’re comfortable flying in regional soaring contests and are eager to visit us again and fly other contests. Here, you can have peace of mind knowing the Contest Director and your fellow pilots all want to see you succeed and complete your tasks in a safe, highly supportive low-pressure environment. Experienced pilots willing to share their knowledge and love for sailplane racing will certainly be abound. If you fear the retrieve after a land-out, there’s no need to here as there’s many Junior and/or crewless pilots who are more than willing to return the favor. Take solace in the fact the terrain is benign, and the tasks will be called appropriately given the weather conditions and pilot experience. For beginners, let R6N be your starting place. Turn the page in your soaring education and experience for yourself the thrill, excitement, and challenge of competing in your first contest. The satisfaction from completing your first sailplane race is like no other. Welcome to R6N!
Experienced contest pilots, former or current National Champions or U.S. Team members, who'd like to mentor "newbies", instruct at the camp, or be one of our guest speakers are encouraged to contact the R6N Contest Manager by clicking on the "Contact Us" button to your Left.

Bring your "Club Class" Ship to R6N

Club Class pilots, former and current Club Class National Champions or U.S. Team members are encouraged to bring their Club Class ships to R6N as a "warm-up" to the Club Class Nationals later this year in Dansville, NY.
For those racing 15m, 18m, 20m or other two-seaters we’ve got “Sports Class” for you to compete in too! Your contest experience is welcome here. Your willingness to take a pilot who’s new to sailplane racing, coach, mentor or otherwise encourage a new racing pilot through the process will certainly leave a positive impression of our sport that no beginner will likely to forget. R6N presents a unique opportunity for experienced pilots to be ambassadors of the sport and to share your passion for sailplane racing with others! On that note, we encourage everyone to identify someone from their home club who’s been dabbling in cross-country (or working the Bronze or Silver Badge program), and invite them to our “rookie camp” contest.

Lenawee Co. Airport (KADG)
Lenawee Co. Airport (KADG), is located in Adrian, Michigan, a quaint, rural college-town nestled among Midwest farms that go for as far as the eye can see… just 30 minutes from I-75 (US-23) and I-90. Adrian is a reasonable driving distance from Regions 3, 4, 7, and nearby Ontario. Join us as we revive a contest site that was once host to the 1965, 1974, and 1979 National Championships, among dozens of other local and regional contests dating back to the late 1930’s. Here, you can read about the 1965 National Championship in the September 1965 issue of Soaring magazine and see how Adrian once set the standard for modern sailplane racing contests. The organizers of R6N are certainly taking a page from this and other popular contest sites to hold a safe, and enjoyable contest for all. It’s no secret much of the soaring talent here in Michigan has either moved away from the area or aged out of the sport. Your participation in R6N will help support a renewed effort to grow the soaring community here in Michigan and to recruit a new crop of pilots into competitive sailplane racing… not just here but throughout the region and the surrounding Great Lakes states. For more info re: accommodations, dining, and social activities, please browse the R6N.org website and take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the contest. Turnpoint and airspace files will be available on the website shortly, and added to the Worldwide Turnpoint Exchange. Airport maps, gridding, glider and trailer tie-down instructions, will be made available too in the weeks ahead. A NOTAM will be issued warning air traffic of the week-long sailplane race. Likewise, tasking will take local airspace considerations into account. Safety is our top priority.
